Diyaluma Falls

The short answer

Diyaluma Falls, near Koslanda, is Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall, dropping about 220 m beside the A4 road between Beragala and Wellawaya. You can see it from the bottom in minutes, but the real draw is the hike to the natural rock pools at the top. It is worth it for fit, careful walkers.

Is Diyaluma Falls worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you like a waterfall with a swim. The river pours off the edge of the hill country onto the lowland plains, and above the drop it runs over smooth rock shelves and pools with a long view over the lowlands.

Seen from the road, Diyaluma is a fine ten-minute stop. The upper pools turn it into a half-day outing, and that is the part people remember.

How do I get to Diyaluma Falls?

The falls are near Koslanda, on the A4 between Beragala and Wellawaya. From Ella it is about 1–1.5 hours by road via Wellawaya; from Haputale, about 45 minutes to an hour via Beragala.

By bus, take a service running along the A4 through Koslanda and ask the conductor to stop at Diyaluma. The nearest railway station is Haputale on the Kandy to Ella line, then a bus or tuk-tuk. Many people hire a tuk-tuk for the day from Ella or Haputale.

What can I do at Diyaluma Falls?

Choose between a quick look and a proper outing. Both are worth the stop.

  • See the full drop from the viewpoint by the main road.
  • Hike up to the upper pools, roughly an hour from the road.
  • Swim in the calm pools well back from the edge when the river is low.
  • Sit on the rock shelves above the drop and look out over the plains.
  • Play the Srilor audio story when you arrive; the first chapter is free.
  • Combine it with Haputale, Lipton’s Seat or Ella in one day.

When is the best time to visit Diyaluma Falls?

January to March is the best window, but check the local rain before you hike. After heavy rain the falls are at their fullest, which is also when the rock is most slippery and the river can rise fast.

In long dry spells the falls can thin out. Go in the morning for cooler walking and clearer views over the plains.

How much does Diyaluma Falls cost?

There is no general admission fee. Local guides wait near the start of the path to the upper pools, and parking or donations may cost extra; agree any price before you set off.

  1. Wear shoes with grip, and swimwear under your clothes.
  2. Bring water and snacks for the hike.
  3. Expect leeches after rain; long socks help.
  4. Take all your rubbish back down with you.

Is it safe to swim at the top of Diyaluma Falls?

It can be, in the right pools and the right conditions. Swim only in pools well back from the lip, never in the channel that feeds the drop, and stay out when the water is fast or brown.

The rock near the edge is slippery and the drop is sheer, so keep well back, even for photos. If rain starts upstream, get out of the water, as the river can rise quickly. A local guide knows which pools are safe that day.
