What is Galle Fort?
Galle Fort covers a headland on the south coast. The Portuguese built the first fort here in the 16th century, and the Dutch took it in 1640 and rebuilt it with the stone ramparts you walk today.
Inside the walls are churches, a mosque, a lighthouse, old merchant houses, museums, shops and cafés. It is a living town, with schools, homes and offices, so treat the lanes as someone’s neighbourhood.
How do I get to Galle Fort?
Galle’s railway station and main bus stand sit side by side, about 5–10 minutes’ walk from the fort’s main gate. Trains from Colombo Fort take about 2.5–3.5 hours along the coast; sit on the right for the sea.
Buses from Colombo run often, and the Southern Expressway gets a car here in about 1.5–2 hours. From Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa or Mirissa, coast-road buses and tuk-tuks are quick, and PickMe and Uber work in Galle.
What can I do in Galle Fort?
The fort is small enough to cross on foot in 15 minutes. It rewards slow wandering.
- Walk the ramparts from the clock tower to the lighthouse and Flag Rock.
- See the Dutch Reformed Church, with old gravestones set into the floor.
- Visit the Meeran Mosque and All Saints’ Church, a few lanes apart.
- Find the VOC crest over the Old Gate, by the harbour.
- Watch sunset from the western ramparts.
- Play the Srilor audio story as you walk in; the first chapter is free.
When is the best time to visit Galle Fort?
December to April is the best time, with dry days and calm sea along the coast from Galle to Tangalle. Peak season starts in December, so book beds in the fort ahead.
From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain most afternoons, but the fort copes well with wet weather, with museums and cafés to duck into. In any month, go early or late; the lanes are hot at midday.
How much does it cost to visit Galle Fort?
There is no general admission fee for the fort. Museums, guided walks and some sights charge separately, so check before you go.
- Cover shoulders and knees for the mosque and churches.
- Watch your footing on the ramparts; the edges are unfenced in places.
- Cliff jumpers at Flag Rock perform for tips; pay only if you watch.
- Eat outside the walls for local prices.
- Stay a night to see the fort quiet after the day visitors leave.
Can you walk the walls of Galle Fort?
Yes, and it is the best way to understand the place. The ramparts run most of the way round the headland, and a loop takes about an hour at an easy pace, longer with stops.
Start at the clock tower in the cool of the morning, or time it to finish on the western side for sunset. In the evening local families, cricket games and couples share the bastions, and it is a good place to sit and watch the town.
