Is Arugam Bay worth visiting?
Yes, in season, for surfers of any level and anyone who likes a small, relaxed beach town. Main Point, at the southern end of the bay, is the famous wave, and easier breaks lie a short tuk-tuk ride north and south.
Away from the surf there are mangrove lagoons, elephants in the nearby parks and old Buddhist ruins in the scrub. Out of season, roughly November to February, many places close and the town is very quiet.
How do I get to Arugam Bay?
Arugam Bay is about 3 km south of Pottuvil, the nearest town and bus stop. From Ella it is about 3–3.5 hours by road via Wellawaya and Monaragala; by bus, change at Wellawaya and Monaragala for Pottuvil, then take a tuk-tuk.
There is no railway to Arugam Bay. From Colombo it is a long day by road, about 7–9 hours, so many people break the trip in Ella or come up from Tissamaharama after Yala.
What can I do in Arugam Bay?
Surf in the morning and explore in the afternoon; that is the rhythm here. Agree tuk-tuk fares to the outer spots before you set off.
- Surf Main Point if you are experienced, or Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm if you are learning.
- Take a boat trip through the mangroves on Pottuvil Lagoon.
- Look for elephants at Lahugala, a short drive inland.
- See the ruins of Muhudu Maha Viharaya on the beach at Pottuvil.
- Climb Elephant Rock, south of the bay, for sunset.
When is the best time to visit Arugam Bay?
May to September is the best time, for surf and drier weather. The surf season starts around April, peaks around July, and October brings the last calm weeks.
From November the north-east monsoon brings rain to the east coast, heaviest in December, and the sea turns rough. The dry season opens again in March, and early-season visits are quiet.
How much does Arugam Bay cost, and what should I know?
There is no fee to visit the town or beaches. You pay for surf lessons, board hire, boat trips and safaris, so agree the price and what is included before you start.
- Dress as locals do in Pottuvil and away from the beach; swimwear is for the sand.
- Wear reef boots at rocky breaks, and know your limits at Main Point.
- Respect the line-up: one surfer per wave, and wait your turn.
- Carry rupees in small notes for tuk-tuks and food.
- Play the Srilor audio story when you arrive; the first chapter is free.
Which surf break at Arugam Bay suits me?
Main Point is a long right-hand point break for intermediate and advanced surfers, and it gets crowded at its peak. Whiskey Point to the north and Peanut Farm to the south have gentler waves and surf schools, which makes them the usual places to learn.
Further afield, Pottuvil Point and Okanda offer longer rides and quieter line-ups when conditions suit. Ask a local surf shop which break is working that day, because it changes with the swell and the tide.
