Colombo Lotus Tower at night from the street

The short answer

The Lotus Tower is Colombo's tallest landmark, about 350 m high and shaped like a lotus bud, beside Beira Lake. Its observation deck gives the widest view of the city and coast, and the tower lights up in changing colours after dark. It's worth an hour or two, ideally around sunset on a clear day.

What is the Lotus Tower in Colombo?

The Lotus Tower, or Nelum Kuluna, is a telecommunications and viewing tower that opened to visitors in 2022. At about 350 m it is the tallest structure in Sri Lanka, and its lotus-bud top can be seen from most of the city.

Visitors go up to an observation deck near the top, and the base has places to eat and other attractions that change over time. It is a good first stop in Colombo to get your bearings, with the Fort district, Beira Lake, the port and the coast laid out below.

How do I get to the Lotus Tower?

The tower stands by Beira Lake, close to the Fort and Pettah districts. From Colombo Fort railway station it is about a 15–20 minute walk or a short tuk-tuk ride; PickMe and Uber give fixed fares in Colombo.

From the airport, allow about an hour by road, or take the Airport Express bus into Colombo and a tuk-tuk from there. From Galle Face Green, a tuk-tuk takes around 10 minutes, traffic allowing.

What can I do at the Lotus Tower?

Most visits are short, so pair the tower with nearby sights. All of these are a walk or a short tuk-tuk ride away.

  • Ride up to the observation deck for the view over the city, port and coast.
  • Stay after dark, when the tower lights up in shifting colours.
  • Visit Gangaramaya Temple and Seema Malaka on Beira Lake.
  • Walk into the Pettah markets nearby.
  • End at Galle Face Green for evening snacks by the sea.

When is the best time to visit the Lotus Tower?

December to April is the best season, with the clearest, driest days on the west coast. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain most afternoons, which can hide the view.

Go in the late afternoon to see the city in daylight, watch the sun set over the sea and stay for the lights. Weekends and holidays bring longer queues, so a weekday is easier.

How much does the Lotus Tower cost?

Entry is paid, and foreign visitors pay a different rate from locals. Prices, inclusions and opening days change, so check before you go.

  1. Look at the sky before you buy; there is little to see in low cloud.
  2. Allow up to 4 hours if you add food or other attractions at the base.
  3. Carry small notes for tuk-tuks and snacks.
  4. Hear the tower’s story on the Srilor app; the first chapter of every audio story is free.

Is the Lotus Tower better at sunset or at night?

Sunset suits most people. In about an hour you get the city in daylight, the sun going down over the Indian Ocean and the first lights coming on.

At night the view becomes a grid of lights, and the tower itself is best seen from outside, from Beira Lake or the streets around it. If you only have time for one visit, go up before dark and watch the colours from below afterwards.
