The short answer

Seven days lets you see Sri Lanka's south coast slowly: a night in Colombo, Bentota and Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga, Galle Fort, the coves around Unawatuna, Mirissa for whales, Hiriketiya and Tangalle, and a last-day safari at Yala. Expect short drives, long lunches and a swim most days from December to April.

Colombo by the sea

Galle Face Green · Gangaramaya Temple and Seema Malaka

Start with a morning walk on Galle Face Green, Colombo’s seafront promenade, before the heat builds. Gangaramaya Temple is about 10–15 minutes away by tuk-tuk; its rooms are crowded with gifts from devotees, and the Seema Malaka pavilion, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, stands on Beira Lake a short walk away. Go back to Galle Face at sunset, when families come out and food stalls set up, and sleep in Colombo.

Tip: In Colombo, book tuk-tuks through PickMe or Uber: the price is fixed and the driver already knows where you are going.

Bentota and Lunuganga

Bentota · Lunuganga Estate

Take the coastal train south to Bentota, about 1.5–2 hours, and sit on the right for the sea. Spend the day on the beach or on a boat trip up the Bentota river. In the late afternoon, visit Lunuganga, the country garden Geoffrey Bawa shaped over decades beside Dedduwa Lake, about 15 minutes inland by tuk-tuk. Sleep in Bentota.

Tip: Lunuganga is usually shown on guided tours at set times. Check before you go and book ahead if you can.

Hikkaduwa and Galle Fort

Hikkaduwa · Galle Fort

Hikkaduwa is about 30–40 minutes south by train or road. Snorkel over the reef in the morning, when the water is calmest, and watch for turtles in the shallows. Continue about 30 minutes to Galle, check into a guesthouse in or near the Fort, and walk the 17th-century ramparts past the lighthouse at sunset. Sleep in Galle.

Tip: Turtles come close to the shore at Hikkaduwa. Watch them, but do not feed or touch them.

Unawatuna’s coves

Unawatuna · Jungle Beach and Rumassala · Dalawella Beach

Unawatuna is about 15 minutes from Galle by tuk-tuk, a sheltered bay that is good for swimming in season. Walk or ride up Rumassala hill, past the Japanese Peace Pagoda, and down to Jungle Beach, a small cove for snorkelling. End the day at Dalawella, just east of Unawatuna, where the reef shelters a shallow pool at low tide. Sleep in Galle again or move to Unawatuna.

Tip: Swim where locals swim and the sea looks calm; currents can be strong outside the reef.

Lagoon, surf town, whale town

Koggala Lake · Weligama · Mirissa

Drive about 20–30 minutes east to Koggala Lake for a morning boat trip among its mangrove islands. Weligama, about 20 minutes further on, has a wide, gentle bay where many people take their first surf lesson. Mirissa is about 10 minutes beyond: sleep there and book a whale-watching boat for the next morning.

Tip: Stilt fishermen near Koggala often expect a tip if you photograph them. Agree it before you take the picture.

Whales and quiet bays

Coconut Tree Hill · Hiriketiya Beach · Tangalle

Whale-watching boats leave Mirissa harbour early, from roughly November to April, and take most of the morning. Afterwards, walk up Coconut Tree Hill, the palm-topped headland at the end of the bay. Then drive about 40 minutes to Hiriketiya, a small horseshoe bay with surf, and about 20 minutes on to Tangalle’s long, quiet beaches to sleep.

Tip: Choose a whale-watching operator that keeps its distance from the whales, and take seasickness tablets if you need them.

Rock temple and leopards

Mulkirigala Rock Temple · Yala National Park

Mulkirigala is about 30 minutes inland from Tangalle; climb its steps in the morning to cave shrines with reclining Buddhas and old murals. Drive about 1.5–2 hours east to Tissamaharama, the base for Yala, and take an afternoon jeep safari for a chance of leopards, elephants and sloth bears. Sleep in Tissamaharama; Colombo is about 4–5 hours away by road, and Ella about 2.5 hours if you are heading for the hills.

Tip: Yala’s main block usually closes for a few weeks each year in the dry season. Check before you book a safari.

Who is this south coast route for?

This is the slow route: short drives, a different bay each day and time to swim. It suits couples, families and anyone ending a busier trip, and it needs no hiking beyond the steps at Mulkirigala and the walk over Rumassala.

If you would rather unpack less, use just two bases after Colombo and do the rest as day trips. Galle or Unawatuna works for the first half of the route, and Mirissa for the second.

How do I get around the south coast?

The coastal railway runs from Colombo through Bentota, Hikkaduwa and Galle to Matara; sit on the right from Colombo for the sea. Second class unreserved is cheap and fine for these short hops. Beyond Matara, use buses, tuk-tuks or a driver.

Buses run along the coast road all day. Red buses are state-run and cheapest, white private buses are faster and louder, and you pay the conductor on board. Many people hire a car and driver for the last two days, because Mulkirigala and Yala are awkward by bus.

When is the best time for the south coast?

December to April is the dry season on the south and west coast, with calm sea from Galle to Tangalle and whales off Mirissa until April. December is the start of peak season, so book beds ahead. Afternoon showers return late in April.

From May to August the south-west monsoon brings rough sea and rain most afternoons; swim only where the flag is green. Showers thin out in September and October, the dry season opens in late November, and beaches reopen through that month.

Questions people ask

Is the south coast of Sri Lanka good in November?

It is improving. The dry season on the south and west coast opens in late November and beaches reopen through the month, so expect some showers early on and steadier weather towards December.

When is whale-watching season in Mirissa?

Roughly November to April. Boats leave Mirissa harbour early in the morning and trips take most of the morning.

Where is the best base on the south coast?

Galle suits history and food, Unawatuna and Mirissa suit swimming and an easy social scene, and Tangalle and Hiriketiya are quieter. Any one of them works as a base for day trips along the coast.

Is Yala worth adding to a beach trip?

Yes, if you want a good chance of seeing leopards. Tissamaharama, the base for Yala, is about 1.5–2 hours from Tangalle, and a safari takes half a day or a full day.
