Little Adam’s Peak

The short answer

Little Adam's Peak is the short ridge walk many visitors do first in Ella: a path through a tea estate and up steps to a grassy summit with views across the Ella Gap to Ella Rock. Go at sunrise, when the light is soft and the path is quiet. It is free and worth it.

What is Little Adam’s Peak?

It is a hill just east of Ella town, named for its likeness to Sri Pada, the much bigger Adam’s Peak to the west. The path climbs through a working tea estate to a grassy summit, with a line of smaller tops running on along the ridge.

It is the closest of Ella’s big viewpoints to town, which also makes it the busiest. The steps near the top are steep, and the ridge beyond the first summit is narrow, so take care there.

How do I get to Little Adam’s Peak?

From Ella town, walk east along the Passara road for about 1.5 km to the signed turn-off, then follow the track up through the tea. Most people reach the top in about 45 minutes to an hour from town.

A tuk-tuk can drop you at the turn-off to save the road walk. Ella itself is on the Kandy to Ella railway and has buses from Badulla, Bandarawela and Wellawaya.

What can I do at Little Adam’s Peak?

Most people climb, look and come down again. There is more on the ridge if you have time.

  • Watch the sun rise over the hills to the east.
  • Walk on along the ridge to the further tops, keeping back from the drops.
  • Look across the gap to Ella Rock and the hills falling away to the lowlands.
  • Try the zip line near the start of the path, if it is running; it costs extra.
  • Walk on to Nine Arches Bridge, which is close by.

When is the best time to climb Little Adam’s Peak?

December to May is the best window, and the early months of the year usually bring the clearest mornings. Showers can come in any month, usually in the afternoon, so start early.

Sunrise is the classic time: leave town in the dark with a torch and you will be at the top as the light comes up. Late afternoon also works, but cloud often sits on the ridge by then.

Does Little Adam’s Peak cost anything?

There is no general admission fee. You may pay for a tuk-tuk to the turn-off, a guide if you want one, or a tea at a café on the way.

  1. Wear shoes with grip; the steps are steep and damp in the early morning.
  2. Bring a torch for a sunrise climb.
  3. Carry water and a light layer; it can be cool at dawn.
  4. Stay on the path through the tea and leave the bushes alone; it is someone’s livelihood.

Is Little Adam’s Peak good for sunrise?

Yes. It is Ella’s most popular sunrise spot, close to town with an open view east.

Check the sunrise time the night before and leave about an hour ahead. Walk the road with a torch and keep to the side, as vehicles are few but fast. Once the sun is up, walk on along the ridge before the day’s crowds arrive.
