What is Nine Arches Bridge?
It is a curved railway viaduct of nine arches on the line between Ella and Badulla, completed around 1921 under British rule. It is about 90 m long and around 25 m high, set in a green bowl of forest and tea. Local guides like to tell you it was built without steel because steel went to the First World War; enjoy it as a story.
How do I get to Nine Arches Bridge from Ella?
The bridge is about 2–3 km from Ella town. You can walk along the railway line from Ella station in about 40–50 minutes, stepping well clear of the rails when a train comes.
The other way is by road: a tuk-tuk to the viewpoint area above the bridge, then a short, steep walk down a path. Agree the fare first; around LKR 100 to 120 a kilometre is fair. Ella is on the Kandy to Ella railway, so it makes the natural base.
What can I do at Nine Arches Bridge?
Most people come for the photo, but the area rewards a slower look. Bring a little patience for the trains.
- Watch a train cross from the slope above the bridge.
- Walk across the bridge between trains and look down over the tea.
- Follow the line towards Demodara to see the Demodara Loop, where the track circles a hill and passes beneath itself.
- Pair it with Little Adam’s Peak, a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away.
- Have a tea at one of the cafés along the viewpoint path.
When is the best time to visit Nine Arches Bridge?
January to March is the best season, but check the local rain before you walk. The bridge works in any month, and green, misty days have their own charm.
Early morning is best, with soft light, fewer people and cooler walking. From mid-morning the bridge fills with photographers, and cloud often rolls in by the afternoon.
How much does it cost to visit Nine Arches Bridge?
There is no general admission fee. You only pay for your tuk-tuk, food at the cafés and any guide you hire; parking or donations may cost extra.
- Wear shoes with grip; the path down from the road is steep and muddy after rain.
- Carry water and a little cash in small notes.
- Check the current drone rules before you fly one.
- Be off the tracks well before a train is due.
When does the train cross Nine Arches Bridge?
There is no fixed ‘bridge time’, because it depends on the Ella to Badulla timetable and on delays. Trains to Badulla cross a short while after leaving Ella, and trains heading towards Kandy cross a short while before they reach Ella.
Check the current timetable at Ella station before you walk out, and expect trains to run late. The cafés at the viewpoint usually know when the next one is due, and you will hear the horn before you see the train.
