North & Jaffna

The north, centred on Jaffna, is the heart of Tamil culture in Sri Lanka: Hindu temples such as Nallur, Jaffna Fort, ferries to the islands of Nainativu and Delft, and a cooking style of its own. It is dry from about March to September, and the north-east monsoon brings rain from November to January.

How do I get to Jaffna?

By train on the northern line from Colombo, or by bus or car along the A9 road through Vavuniya and Elephant Pass.

Is Jaffna worth visiting?

Yes. It feels different from the rest of the island, with Tamil temples and food, a quiet old fort and day trips by ferry to the islands.

What should I wear at Nallur Kandaswamy Temple?

Cover shoulders and knees, and take off your shoes before you go in. Men are expected to remove their shirts before entering the temple.
